Newman's Own Foundation Gives $2.4 Million in Public Broadcasting Grants

Westport, CT – Newman’s Own Foundation, the organization started by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, announces grants totaling $2.4 million, over two years, to 13 public broadcasting stations and organizations. The grants represent an ongoing commitment of Newman’s Own Foundation to support open dialogue and promote civic engagement.

“Paul Newman believed that the independent voice played a critical role in making our world a better place,” said Robert Forrester, President of Newman’s Own Foundation. “He was a strong supporter of public broadcasting, and we are proud to maintain that support for today and into the future.” Total giving by Newman’s Own in support of public broadcasting is nearly $10 million.

Funds will be used by some stations to generate increased donor giving through challenge grants. In other cases, funds will be directed to programming or special projects. One example is the National Public Radio’s Military Voices Initiative, where the experiences of military personnel, veterans, and their families will be recorded and broadcast.

Newman's Own Foundation Gives $1 Million in Grants for Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

Newman’s Own Foundation, the organization started by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, has made grants totaling $1 million to 11 organizations in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The first round of grants, made shortly after October’s storm, addressed immediate needs relating to food shortages. The latest grants, made in December, support rebuilding efforts. Altogether, the funding represents a commitment from Newman’s Own Foundation to help those most severely affected by the storm in the northeast, both in the near-term and during long-term recovery.

“We are saddened by the hardship felt by so many people along the East Coast in the wake of Hurricane Sandy,” said Robert Forrester, Newman’s Own Foundation President and CEO. “We are grateful to the nonprofits in the region that are extending themselves to serve those in need throughout this difficult time.”

The organizations that have received hurricane relief grants are:

Newman's Own Foundation Commits $5 Million in Grants to Support Nutrition Focused Programs

Westport, CT – Newman’s Own Foundation, the organization started by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, today announced that it is making nearly $4 million in grants over a two-year period to 40 U.S. nonprofit organizations that run nutrition programs. This is in addition to $1 million already granted to nutrition programs earlier this year.

The grants will go to organizations that focus on areas including: nutrition education for children and families; child nutrition with a focus on feeding hungry children and/or reducing childhood obesity; and fresh food access for underserved communities.

The 40 organizations receiving grants over the two-year period are located across the U.S. and have developed innovative programs that are helping to advance nutrition awareness, education, and fresh food access. Most of them are taking a grass-roots approach in helping to solve problems, one community at a time.

"We are inspired by the dynamic and creative approaches that are growing in the nonprofit sector to help combat some of the most challenging issues around nutrition,” said Lisa Walker, Managing Director of Newman’s Own Foundation. “The Foundation’s work in this arena is intended to increase the momentum that is building around the country to help create more delicious and healthy choices.”

Nutrition is one of four focus areas supported by Newman’s Own Foundation. The other areas are: “Encouraging Philanthropy,” “Empowerment,” and “Children with Life-Limiting Conditions.” The Foundation chose nutrition because it is an area that Paul Newman originally supported, and one with opportunities for the Foundation to have significant impact.“For decades, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own have supported organizations working to prevent hunger, such as food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries,” Walker said. “Today, the needs are becoming more complex with hunger and obesity escalating, and we’re seeing a lack of access to nutritious food. We are pleased to support organizations that are impacting these areas."

Paul Newman established Newman’s Own Foundation in 2005, as a means of continuing his pledge to donate to charity all net profits and royalties from the sale of Newman’s Own products. Since the food company’s founding in 1982, Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have donated more than $350 million to thousands of charities worldwide.

Examples of the nutrition grants just announced include:

Edible Schoolyard NYC – bringing its health and wellness program to East Harlem students in grades K-8, including lessons in the school garden and kitchen.
Wholesome Wave – providing seed funding for food hubs in New England, which increase the regional supply of locally grown nutritious food.
The Food Trust – improving healthy food access and education for underserved children in Philadelphia, PA.
Urban Dove – promoting nutrition and fitness among at-risk youth in New York City through a comprehensive in-school program.
National Relief Charities – giving Native American teenagers in Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota the tools to make nutritious food-shopping choices with limited resources and to prepare healthy, delicious meals.
FirstLine Schools / Edible Schoolyard New Orleans – expanding nutrition-based wellness programs to five area schools.
People’s Grocery – supporting the Growing Justice Institute in Oakland, CA, helping community leaders develop income-generating projects that improve access to nutritious foods.

Westport, CT – Today marks the 30th anniversary of the first shipment of Newman’s Own salad dressing to a retail outlet, marking the beginning of the successful food company. Paul Newman, the late actor and philanthropist, bottled his homemade salad dressing with encouragement from friends and neighbors who raved about the recipe. On this day in 1982, 500 cases of Newman’s Own salad dressing were shipped to Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk, Connecticut, which was the first store to carry Newman’s Own products.

In its first year of business, Newman’s Own generated over $300,000 in profits. To fulfill his lifelong commitment to making the world a better place, Newman decided to donate 100% of the profits and royalties to charity, a mission that continues. To date, over $350 million have been given to charitable organizations, worldwide.

Soon after the launch of salad dressing, Newman’s Own branched out to other all-natural products, such as pasta sauce, lemonade, salsa, popcorn, and most recently, frozen pizza and frozen skillet meals. Today there are more than 100 varieties of Newman’s Own products available.

Newman’s Own is celebrating its 30th anniversary through the end of 2012.
