Newman’s Own Foundation Appoints Jennifer Smith Turner to Board of Directors

Newman’s Own Foundation today announced that Jennifer Smith Turner has been elected to the Board of Directors of Newman’s Own Foundation.

Ms. Turner is President and CEO of Smith & Associates LLC, a company that specializes in assisting organizations achieve their strategic an operational potential. She is also the retired CEO of the Girl Scouts of Connecticut where she served as the first CEO of the combined organization of five Girl Scout councils that merged in 2007. 
 
With experience as a leader and change agent, Ms. Turner has a deep and diverse background in business, government, academia, and civic involvement. She served as President and CEO of BerkleyCare Network and Vice President of W. R. Berkley Corporation. Previously, she was at Aetna Life & Casualty for 10 years where she held a variety of executive level positions, including CEO of HealthWays/Aetna Professional Management Corporation, Vice President of Aetna Health Plans, and Vice President, Occupational Managed Care. She also worked for Travelers Insurance for 10 years in numerous management positions.
 
Jennifer has experience in state government where she served as Deputy Commissioner for the State of Connecticut’s Department of Economic and Community Development. Working for the City of Hartford, she served as Director of Personnel and Assistant City Manager.
 
Her community and civic involvement included serving as President of the Board of The Hartford Stage Company and as a Regent at the University of Hartford, as well as being a Board Member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Hartford Healthcare Board, Achievement First Central Board, Connecticut Television and Radio, University of Connecticut Foundation, the United Way, and several other nonprofits. Among other accomplishments, while a member of the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees, she played a role in crafting the University of Connecticut (UConn) 2000 capital improvement strategy and represented UConn as a member of an international board for the University’s African National Congress Partnership with South Africa.

Ms. Turner is a published poet. She is a graduate of Union College in Schenectady, NY and received her Masters degree from Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. She resides in Massachusetts with her husband, Eric Turner.
