The Big Apple Circus's Clown Care program brings the joy of the classical circus to nearly 200,000 hospitalized children each year. In partnership with the chief medical and administrative staff at 14 pediatric hospitals, clown doctors conduct their own version of medical rounds, known as "clown rounds," where the healing power of humor is always the prescription. Fundamentally, Clown Care empowers children through a gentle parody of the regimented and potentially intimidating hospital environment. During their rounds, they visit children in inpatient wards, intensive care units, emergency rooms, and in physical therapy, bone marrow transplant, pediatric AIDS, outpatient, and acute care clinics.
The clown doctors' work is fully integrated into each of its partner hospital's Child Life services and overall standard of care. The clowns are a valued part of the hospital team, boosting staff morale and the ability of medical staff to be as effective as possible in their work. In addition, the clowns provide tremendous relief to a child's family members.
