Shining Hope for Communities empowers the residents of Kibera, Kenya, while appealing to American donors to help fund its programs. With that support, Shining Hope aims to increase the number of people served.
Shining Hope for Communities is focused on becoming a well-recognized and respected organization working to alleviate poverty and improve gender equality in Kibera, one of Africa's largest slums. The nonprofit received a challenge grant from Newman's Own Foundation, designed to help the organization expand its services and increase its ability to serve more clients.
The $50,000 challenge grant was incorporated into Shining Hope's annual campaign and was a key element in its success. As a result of this fund drive, the organization added 961 donors to the roster and raised more than $266,000 in just 45 days at the end of 2011. These numbers nearly double the previous year's totals.
The success of Shining Hope's fundraising has allowed it to build a new school and double the number of girls being educated, as well as open Kibera's largest clean water access point. In all, the organization served more than 40,000 community members in 2012 -- more than twice its 2011 numbers.View All Stories
