The struggle to find healthy, yet affordable, food had put Leticia in a very tough predicament. Her son is pre-diabetic as well as overweight, and her family consumed a fairly unhealthy diet. Leticia and her family emigrated from Mexico to Queens, New York, 15 years ago, and they live in a neighborhood that lacks affordable, fresh produce. She needed to find some solution that would allow her family to eat healthier.
Luckily Leticia found Wholesome Wave, an organization with the goal of increasing affordable access to fresh, local and regional food. With their help she is able to use coupons provided through the program to increase the value of her dollar at the local farmers market. This allows her to buy an assortment of fresh produce such as corn, cucumbers, carrots, and celery.
Now that she is able to afford healthier food she is pleased that her family will be able to eat the same fruits and vegetables that she did while growing up in Mexico. Leticia’s family members, including her diabetic son, are truly enjoying these new changes and love the way this fresh food makes them feel.
