Wholesome Wave is a national nonprofit created to address diet-related diseases by helping low-income Americans buy and eat healthy fruits and vegetables. Wholesome Wave’s innovative initiatives reach half a million under-served consumers, as well as thousands of farmers, annually, in 49 states and counting.
Wholesome Wave’s Produce Prescription Program allows healthcare providers to prescribe fruits and vegetables to help treat and prevent obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, among other conditions.
The program was first established in the 2014 Farm Bill with $100 million in funding following advocacy by Wholesome Wave founder Michel Nischan and his team. In the 2018 Farm Bill, the program was expanded to $250 million. The program model also consists of Wholesome Wave raising private money to partner with doctors and nurse practitioners across the country.
Wholesome Wave was founded with support from Newman’s Own Foundation.
